What is translation?


Translational research represents the interface between basic research and clinical development. The goal is to enable the latest findings from basic research to lead to new therapies or diagnostic procedures for patients in the shortest of times. At the same time, questions that arise during the clinical practice are fed back to basic research for systematic analysis.




BRICS – Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology

At the Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology (BRICS), methods from systems biology are applied to research in the field of infectious diseases. For this purpose, scientists from various fields of expertise work together interdisciplinarily. Microbiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, bioengineering, physical chemistry, physics, mathematics and informatics all meet at the BRICS – a shared centre of the Technische Universität Braunschweig and the Helmholtz-Centre for Infection Research. The techniques of basic research applied at the BRICS found the basis for developing new drugs, therapies and diagnostic methods.


The BRICS will be located in a common research facility on the main campus of the Technische Universität Braunschweig. The new building will be operative by the end of 2015. It will host seven BRICS research groups. In addition to laboratories and offices, there will be seminar rooms as well as facilities for laboratory and IT training on an total area of 3500 square meters. The costs for the building are split equally between the federal state of Lower Saxony and the Technische Universität Braunschweig.


In systems biology, researchers simulate complex biological processes with the help of mathematical models. The predictions made by these computer generated models are then verified in laboratory experiments. If the experimental results differ from the predictions, the mathematical models are revised again. This cycle of theory and experiment helps scientists to plan their experiments more accurately and provides a deeper understanding of biological processes than experiments alone. The systems biology approach requires intense interdisciplinary work from scientists with theoretical as well as practical expertise.
